Qualifications:

 

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Dispatching office experience and experience with routing and scheduling of a bus fleet is highly desired. 
  • Three years of experience demonstrating knowledge of pupil transportation regulations and procedures desired.
  • Possess valid Washington State Driver’s Class B Commercial Driver’s License with a passenger endorsement, a school bus driver’s authorization and maintain an acceptable driving record is highly desired.
  • Working knowledge of Synergy Student System, Computerized Routing programs, MS Office, Excel, Google Workspace, Gmail and GPS software.
  • three years of school bus driving experience with demonstrated student management skills prefered. 
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret road and street maps and translate the information into computerized routing and map system.
  • Ability to communicate readily and effectively with district wide staff, students, parents and community resource individuals in writing, over the phone and over a two way radio.
  • Ability to sustain poise and confidence in managing emotional and difficult situations.
  • Self-motivated with good organizational skills.
  • Experience demonstrating knowledge of pupil transportation regulations and procedures desired.
  • Knowledge of department and district administrative field and athletic trip processes desired.
  • Experience with OSPI Student Transportation Allocation Reporting System (STARS) software preferred.
  • Supervisory experience and/or demonstrated leadership ability.

  • Ability to read and handle large quantities of paperwork
  • Possess good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to move around the office and transportation complex in order to deal with emergencies
  • Ability to lift and move moderately sized objects 
  • Regular attendance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position to achieve program requirements
  • Drive a school bus route at anytime in emergency situations
  • Adept at using a computer to maintain, track and analyze data

 

Essential Functions:

 

  • Work in a flexible and cooperative manner
  • Treat co-workers, supervisors, students, parents and others with dignity and respect at all times
  • Serve as a positive role model for students, and practice the behaviors that are expected of our students
  • Supervise Bus Drivers, includes keep a calendar of days off and administer all leave forms, prepare and assist with performance evaluations, conduct performance counseling, supervise daily activities and other supervisory responsibilities
  • Plan and coordinate all student transportation including trips and shuttles.  Assign drivers, sub drivers and transportation bus support to buses for daily routes, advising schools of changes. Maintain continuing check on student bus count and make bus and/or route changes as necessary  
  • Processing transportation requests
  • Prepare bid sheets for routes, shuttles and summer school
  • Work closely with Special Services, including the Jim Tangeman Center, GATE, ECC, HOPE, ELL and Teen Parent programs 
  • Be able to adjust schedule as requested and as needed by the transportation department
  • Respond to questions from public concerning routes, bus stops, schedules, loads, rules, and regulations. Process all bus stop requests and route changes. Includes inspecting locations, making recommendation to supervisor, and communicating decision to interested parties
  • Develop route complexes and assign buses to meet the needs of students.
  • Receive bus trouble calls and dispatch mechanics and/or substitute buses.  
  • Review driver route books to be sure of accuracy and assist drivers with directions, student rosters and maps.
  • Follow and update district procedures for response and reporting of emergency situations such as lost students, accidents and other emergency situations.
  • Follow and update plan for the safe return of Kindergarten students to their home school.
  • Assist with yearly in-service meetings.
  • Create coverage for crew meetings in a cost effective way.
  • Perform all duties associated with dispatching.
  • Assist drivers in proper documentation of time. Monitor route hours for budget efficiency. 
  • Brief drivers on special requirements, road conditions, and other unusual situations.
  • Assist in reporting, documenting and tracking requirements for compilation of annual state transportation reporting requirements.
  • Regular attendance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position to achieve program requirements.
  • Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor

Benefits/Compensation:

 

Salary range:  New employees will start at the minimum hourly rate in the salary range.  However, employees who have verified prior years of service in a similar occupational status from other Washington School Districts or Education School Districts, may receive experience credit towards salary placement.  Salary schedules can be accessed here.

Retirement: Employees may be eligible for retirement benefits through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS). Eligibility is based on FTE. Detailed information can be found here.

 

Time Off:  Vancouver Public Schools offers paid holidays and paid time off, including but not limited to, sick, vacation, personal, and bereavement leave.

  • Sick Leave: 8 hours per month (part-time employee accrual will be proportionate to their FTE).
  • Personal Leave: 3 days per school year 
  • Twelve (12) month full-time Pro Tech employees are eligible to accrue ten (10) days vacation at one (1) - five (5) years of service.  The accrual days are incrementally improved by five (5) days at the completion of five (5), eleven (11) and twenty (20) consecutive years of service respectively.
